British Airways Launches Mobile Check-in App

On July 19 British Airways (BA) is launching a mobile app allowing customers to check in and download their boarding passes. Initially only available domestically, BA plans to expand operations to all its flights.
From July 19, BA customers will be able to download an app which allows them to access flight information and view check-in times. According to reports the app will allow members of BA’s ‘Executive Club’ (which is free to join) to download their own boarding cards to their smartphones which can then be scanned at check-in.
The app will be available first on flights from Edinburgh, Scotland to Heathrow but plans are in place to expand the use of the app to cover all domestic flights by the end of August before expanding its use to short- and eventually long-haul flights.
The application, which will be available through the Apple store, is a redesign of the original, rather basic BA app which debuted with the UK launch of the iPhone. This latest application will first be available to download to iPhones before being launched on the Blackberry and Android platforms at a later date.
A spokesperson for BA said the app was designed to make it more convenient for customers accessing BA’s website through mobile platforms.
On June 3 easyJet announced plans to launch a mobile platform commerce site as a means of capitalizing on their customers’ increasing use of smart phones and other mobile devices.
Guest Writer “yl_ksa”- Gowalla

Gowalla is a service that enables its users to discover places around them in the city they are in (any city, its even available here in the Gulf) and once they are in one of these places around them they can check in and share their check in on Facebook and/or Twitter. For example, lets say you went out to have lunch, then you just open Gowalla’s application, check the places near by you and once you find the place you are in simply check in and that will notify your Gowalla friends right away that you’re having lunch at this place at this exact moment.
Once you check in you can also post a comment, so you can say what your ordered and whether you liked it or not so other people who visits the same place can see that and take you on your recommendation, you can also post a photo of the place or of the food, you can also view a leaderboard to see who is the most user visiting this place or even see who have been here before you and so on. Gowalla gets better and better with more friends, of course just don’t add people you don’t like or they will be annoying you wherever you go.
Make sure you check it out, Gowalla has free applications to be downloaded for iPad, iPhone/iPod touch, Android, Blackberry & Palm. Even if you own a Nokia or any other phone then all you have to do is visit their mobile site and that will enable you to view the nearby places and check in it.
Sony NEX-VG10 Handycam

Not content to simply let its nearly pocket-sized NEX-5 Camera shoot 1080p video, Sony’s taken the next step and built an actual camcorder around its 14.2 megapixel APS-C sensor. The result is the Sony NEX-VG10 Handycam ($2,000), which Sony claims is the “world’s first consumer interchangeable lens camcorder.” Powered by the aforementioned Exmor sensor, the VG10 sports a camcorder-like body, with a Quad Capsule Spatial Array Stereo Microphone, 3-inch LCD, dual accessory shoes, a high-res traditional viewfinder, Memory Stick and SDXC storage, and an included E-Mount 18-200mm Optical SteadyShot lens that’s augmented by compatibility with all E-Mount lenses, as well as most A-mount glass via an optional adapter. Oh, and it also shoots full 14-megapixel stills, just in case you’re wondering.

Apple issues advice to avoid iPhone flaw

Apple has released official advice for iPhone 4 owners to overcome the problem of the device losing signal when held by the lower left corner.
Steve Jobs responded to a query about the problem from one owner by saying: “Just avoid holding it in that way.”
The official advice is to “avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band”.
Alternatively, said Apple, customers could buy a case to shield the antenna.
The iPhone 4 went on sale on 24 June, with hundreds of people queuing outside Apple’s flagship store in central London for the launch.
Many new owners reported that signal strength dropped when the phone was held.
In a statement, Apple said: “Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas.”
Steve Jobs issued his response in a message responding to an e-mail from the Ars Technica news site. Mr Jobs wrote that “All phones have sensitive areas”.
The problem is thought to be particularly acute for left-handed owners who naturally touch the phone in the sensitive area.
The casing of Apple’s latest phone is made of stainless steel, which also serves as its antenna.
Apple sells a rubber “bumper” that shields the sensitive area as do many other firms.
Richard Warner, one of the first to buy an iPhone 4, contacted BBC News, saying that he thought the phone was “useless in its current state”.
“Apple have created a phone that has an antenna on the bottom left-hand side of the phone.”
“This means that when you hold it in your left hand, the signal bars slowly fade until there is no signal,” he wrote.
‘Complaints’
A number of videos have been posted on video sharing site YouTube complaining about the reception issue.
One video had an American user running a speed test, with hands on and hands free.
In it, the user ‘awington’ says that, while holding the phone “it won’t even run the test when I am holding the phone… once I let go, it makes a connection and runs the test.
“Hold it a second time, and the upload test will not start.”
Social networking site Twitter was full of chatter, with numerous tweets on the reception problems.
The issue might stem from the way the integrated antenna is constructed. One section provides mobile reception, while another is for wi-fi.
Some users have speculated that touching the bottom of the phone bridges this gap, affecting signal strength.
When Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone 4 at Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, he described the integrated antenna as “really cool engineering”.
