Google introduces Call from Gmail, free calls to US and Canada
Rumors have been buzzing about since June, but Google just made it official — the company’s baking Google Voice calls right into Gmail today. Like the Google Chat text, voice and video chat integrated into the web-based email client in prior years, full phone calls will also be an option using VoIP technology from the Gizmo5 aquisition. Google’s demoing the “Call from Gmail” service for us in San Francisco this morning, and it’s looking like it’s not free, but fairly cheap — a product manager just called Paris for $0.02 a minute. Incoming calls pop up as a chat window in Gmail (and ring your Google Voice-equipped phones simultaneously) and you press a “Call phone” button that appears near the top of the Chat window to send an outbound call, at which point a dialer appears where you can copy and paste numbers or tap them in manually. Users can screen incoming calls or send them to voicemail with a single tap.
You’ll be able to make calls to US and Canadian landlines completely free of charge, buying prepaid credits using Google Checkout for international landline calling at $0.02 a minute and a good bit more (We saw $0.19 to Spain) for calls to international mobile devices. Google will sell its own credits for the program (via Google Checkout), which should be available in a few weeks, but the Voice in Gmail service goes live today in the US and will begin rolling out to users immediately. Google’s only committed to free calls to US and Canadian landlines through the end of the year, as paid international calls are the sole revenue stream here: “Our hope is we’ll be able to make enough margin on international calls to keep offering it at that low price,” a product manager told us. We’re going to give some VoIP goodness a spin right now, check back later for impressions!
Toshiba Corporation, Japanese electronics maker plans to sell the world’s first 3D televisions by the end of this year which do not require glasses to watch, said an AFP report.
The company plans to unveil three models of 3D televisions of 21 inches screen before the Christmas Eve with an expected price of several thousand dollars, the report said.
Toshiba wants to incorporate a new technology in 3D televisions displaying stereoscopic images for the viewers which avoids wearing special 3D vision glasses.
“People can enjoy images in three dimensions from various positions and suffer less stress,” the report said.
Earlier, 3D television launches from major electronic makers in Japan saw a poor response in terms of sales and customers were annoyed to wear glasses every time.
Toshiba spokeswoman declined to comment on the report. “We are not in a position to make any announcement,” the report said quoting her.

Hi Sultana,
we wanted to take a moment and send a personal note. there was a service outage on August 2nd, between the hours of 9:30pm and 16:30pm PST and we are truly sorry about this. if you are still having problems with your iPhone, can you please try the following:
1. delete WhatsApp application from your iPhone (this will sadly delete your chat history)
2. reboot your iPhone (not required, but good thing to do)
3. download a fresh copy of version 2.5.7 (!) by opening the http://itunes.com/app/whatsapp URL on your iPhone (you won’t get charged again if you use the same iTunes account as iTunes is pretty smart:)
in the future you can follow our system status updates via twitter: @wa_status
This guy eats some food on his iPad, called it the iDish. He’s just using his iPad as a dish, often with some appetizing food or fancy dishes displayed on the screen to make the meal look better. He expains:
“iDish, what did you think?
After all these trials, I hesitate to say this,
but overall, the impression of eating foods with iDish actually is,
it does not taste so great.
After all, electric device and food doesn’t match.
It’s better to eat with normal dishes.
And iDish is flat surface, Curry can’t be scooped.
In addition, the biggest problem is,
Your iPad will be dirty.
Well, I knew that all along
I used a LCD protector, and repeated to use and wash every time.
However, after some trials, that became confusing,
and I put salmon sashimi directly on the iPad screen.
My iPad got fishy smell. You need to be careful.
For all of these reasons,
even if you are interested in iDish after reading this article,
I don’t recommend you to do it at home.”
On July 19 British Airways (BA) is launching a mobile app allowing customers to check in and download their boarding passes. Initially only available domestically, BA plans to expand operations to all its flights.
From July 19, BA customers will be able to download an app which allows them to access flight information and view check-in times. According to reports the app will allow members of BA’s ‘Executive Club’ (which is free to join) to download their own boarding cards to their smartphones which can then be scanned at check-in.
The app will be available first on flights from Edinburgh, Scotland to Heathrow but plans are in place to expand the use of the app to cover all domestic flights by the end of August before expanding its use to short- and eventually long-haul flights.
The application, which will be available through the Apple store, is a redesign of the original, rather basic BA app which debuted with the UK launch of the iPhone. This latest application will first be available to download to iPhones before being launched on the Blackberry and Android platforms at a later date.
A spokesperson for BA said the app was designed to make it more convenient for customers accessing BA’s website through mobile platforms.
On June 3 easyJet announced plans to launch a mobile platform commerce site as a means of capitalizing on their customers’ increasing use of smart phones and other mobile devices.
